Where to Grab a Late Night Bite in the Hudson Valley

When the midnight cravings strike, head to these local eateries for your foodie fix.

It’s Friday night. You’re in the middle of a Netflix binge with friends or maybe you just finished drinks at a cool local bar. Out of nowhere, a rumble sounds. Is it thunder? Fireworks? No, it’s just your stomach, reminding you that the midnight munchies are, in fact, a thing.

Instead of retreating home to a box of mac and cheese or, if you’re lucky, a slice of cold pizza, hit these Hudson Valley eateries for an evening bite that hits the spot and tastes great, to boot.

As the offshoot of Fish & Game in Hudson, Backbar is just what upstate foodies need late at night. Regardless of what the second hand says, visitors to this intimate Hudson bar can savor upscale eats like cumin lamb dumplings, crispy pork belly, and chilled sesame noodles. Anyone who’s down for a drink should take a peek at the expertly curated beverage menu, which features clever cocktails, local brews, and a wonderfully streamlined wine list. Sample the Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire slushy, made with mescal, Thai chili infused aperol, lime, smoked agave, and sumac for a bit of spice. If creamy drinks are more your thing, swoop in on the Cins of Passion, an intoxicating fusion of cachaca, passionfruit, cinnamon, and coconut milk.

Open: 24 hours daily

No matter what time of day or night it is, Convenient Deli is there for you. The 24-hour spot is a must for sandwiches, which are bargain priced and satisfying when you need something hearty late at night. Go for the Steak and Jack Hero, a savory combination of roast beef and pepper jack cheese melted with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It’s not fancy, but it is delicious.

1094 Madison Ave, Albany
Open: Daily until 2 a.m., kitchen closes at 1 a.m.

With a close proximity to SUNY Albany, Junior’s is a hotspot for college students and weekend visitors alike. Although the menu is extensive, set your sights on the Moonshine Wings and the illustrated drink menu. Indulge in the wee hours of the night with a Bourbon Milkshake, made with rumchata cinnamon cream, as you chow down on an order of wings or a hearty plate of Buffalo Chicken Poutine.

Max’s on Main

246 Main St, Beacon, 845.838.6297
Open: Sun-Wed until midnight, Thurs until 1 a.m., Fri until 2 a.m., Sat until 3 a.m.

Although there are a number of late night eateries in Beacon, few hit the spot quite like Max’s. Not only does it win points for its casual, welcoming ambiance, but it also bats a home run on the food front. Lean into the comforting grub with a plate of Max’s Wings, tossed in a sauce of your choosing, or snack on the pierogies, which are made even more perfect with sour cream and salsa on the side. If you need something a bit more filling before you hit the hay, go for the Pull’d Pork sandwich with crispy fried onions on a toasted onion roll. The pineapple barbecue sauce is the perfect balance to the rich braised pork and creamy cheddar cheese.

Palace Diner

If you live in Rockland County, Peppermill South is a lifesaver when it comes to late night dining. The Ruck

104 3rd St, Troy, 518.273.1872
Open: Daily until 4 a.m., kitchen closes at 1 a.m.

Not many restaurants in the Hudson Valley can say they’re open seven days a week, 365 days a year. The Ruck in Troy happens to be one of the few. It delivers a dose of irony with cheeky names that hit the millennial crowd hardest. After all, there’s nothing like ordering “You’re the Wurst” grilled chicken and apple sausages to go with your “Millennials Can’t Buy Houses” avocado toast. Hey, you can be healthy-ish at 1 a.m., right?

Schatzi’s Pub & Bier Garden

36 Main St, New Paltz, 845.255.1203
202 Main St, Poughkeepsie, 845.454.1179
Open: Daily until 2 a.m., closed Tuesday

Although Schatzi’s closes its doors around 2 a.m., that still gives hungry locals enough time to grab a bite before the kitchen shuts down. Embrace the gastropub fare and sample bar bits like pierogies, poutine, and potato pancakes. If you plan ahead, you can stick around the pub for the whole evening. With gourmet eats, a top-notch beer lineup, and a lively bar scene, you can find everything you would want on a Friday night in one spot.
