What to Wear at a Wedding: Can I Wear Pants Instead of a Dress If I'm in the Bridal Party?

A bridesmaid opts for a pantsuit instead of a dress. What does the Wedding Guru think?

It’s an honor to be selected as a bridesmaid… and it’s the clever bride who keeps that in mind — and doesn’t make her attendants “suffer!”

Dear Wedding Guru: “One of my bridesmaids asked if she can wear a pantsuit instead of a dress. Is that going to appear strange? (If not, where can I tell her to look?”

The Wedding Guru says: First off, let me commend you for being so understanding. If you’ve ever been a bridesmaid yourself, you know how expensive it can be. Allowing your bridesmaids flexibility in their attire is a very nice gesture — and one that’ll be most appreciated.

As for where she can look, she’s probably already seen something before she asked your permission. If not, I suggest the special occasion section of department stores, boutiques, and bridal salons. Since gay weddings are legal in New York, many bridal salons now carry white pantsuits and tuxedos for women. The pantsuits can often be ordered in a different color, i.e. to match what the other bridesmaids are wearing. Tuxedos for women are very much in style this year and can be found in many stores.  If you and she agree on a tuxedo, you can ask her to wear a tuxedo shirt to match your bridesmaids’ colors.
