Regardless of budget or resources, some wedding traditions simply need to be scrapped! Here’s one:
A Hudson Valley bride asks: “My mother and I have a disagreement that I hope you can resolve. I really would like to omit wedding favors. For the most part, I find them useless and tacky. I’ve never taken home a party favor that didn’t get tossed in the garbage. It seems that they’re a real waste of money and are ecologically objectionable. Mom disagrees. Who’s right on this one?”

The Wedding Guru answers: Party favors are a “fluff” item and can be omitted at will — so you’re correct. But Mom’s got reason to object: If carefully chosen, favors can add a nice decorative touch. If you’re concerned about the environment (who isn’t?), you might want to consider other options for favors that are more eco-friendly. Flower pots (filled with a perennial that can be planted in your guests’ gardens, perhaps) is one alternative. Or you could present seed packets that can be planted later. (Ed. note: To make it extra special, tie a ribbon around it and include a handwritten line that reads “May the seeds of love planted today blossom into eternal joy.”) Another idea is to give each guest a scroll made from recycled paper indicating that, in lieu of favors, a contribution has been made to one of your favorite “green” projects or organizations. Any of these favors should satisfy both you and your mother!
