Wedding Traditions: Does My Dad Have to Walk Me Down the Aisle?

Though it’s a tradition that the father of the bride escorts her down the aisle on her wedding day, it’s not necessarily “law”

Perhaps because weddings are such a big deal and (for most) they occur just once in a couple’s lifetime, it’s very easy to hurt someone’s feelings if they are excluded. The Wedding Guru says: The simple answer is “no” — you can give the honor to anyone who is important in your life, such as your mom, stepdad, brother, or a close friend. If you wish, you can have more than one person accompany you, too. It is becoming increasingly prevalent that both mom and dad walk the bride down the aisle. In the Jewish tradition, this has been standard procedure for a long time!

That’s the simple answer, but now I have a question to ask of you: Why don’t you want your dad walking you down the aisle? This has traditionally been the honor given to the father of the bride. I hope that you’re not making this decision lightly, because if you have a good relationship with your father, he will no doubt be hurt. It’s something that, once done, you will never be able to undo!
