Wedding Day Emergency Kit

The Wedding Guru Judy Lewis fields this week’s wedding questions. Today: A bride challenges our Wedding Guru on wedding-day preparedness

The Boy Scouts motto “Be Prepared” certainly applies to your special day. This week’s query comes in the form of a challenge, which I hope I’m prepared for!

A Valley bride asks: “I might be neurotic, but I really can’t get past the idea that something awful will happen to ruin my wedding day. Here’s a challenge for you: Is there anything I can do to prepare myself for any problems?”

Dear Valley bride: First let me assure you that you’re not neurotic! It’s perfectly normal to be concerned about problems that may arise on your wedding day — and you can certainly prepare for them. Here are a few of my favorite tips:

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve crawled around on the floor looking for the backing of my earring. I’ll drop them because I usually put on my earrings as I leave the house — almost always in a rush, of course. Should it happen to you, I suggest using a piece of eraser from the end of a pencil, cork, or if all else fails, chewing gum. (And yes, I have done that!)

Many brides tell me that when the boutonnieres are pinned on the ushers, one or more of the blooms break off. As a quick fix, a glue gun will work to reattach the blossom. You can also borrow a flower from the centerpiece or even the bride’s bouquet. (Obviously, to really be prepared, order a few extra boutonnieres.)

Here’s one that I used at my daughter’s wedding: No sooner had I stepped onto the dance floor that one of my shoe’s heels broke off. With no Krazy Glue in sight, I did the next best thing — I broke off the heel from the other shoe. For me it was a good excuse to not have to dance in high heels.

You also can’t go wrong with some clear nail polish and masking tape. The polish will put the kibosh on runs in your stockings, and the masking tape can be used for such things as securing a torn hem.

And the best advice I can give you? If there’s a mishap, take a deep breath and… count to 10. Guests rarely notice the glitches that may seem so important to the bride — so stop worrying, kick up your broken high heels, and go with the flow!
