To Hairdo or Not to Hairdo?

The Wedding Guru Judy Lewis fields this week’s wedding questions. Today: A bride insists on doing her own hairdo, but our Guru thinks this is a hair-don’t!

Splurge on yourself for your wedding day — no one will blame you and no one will criticize you. So go for it! Even if you already know how to doll yourself up, think of your special day as one in which you can upgrade your beauty services. There’s a reason why a woman’s hair is called her “crowning glory,” right? Paying attention to your hair and wedding hairdo should definitely be on your to-do list.

A Valley bride asks: “I’ve been doing my own hair ever since I was in high school, and feel like I can make it look really good for my wedding. But… my mom and friends are all on my case to find a professional hairstylist. I think it’s pretty much an expenditure that I don’t need to make. Do you think they’re right? Maybe then I’ll change my mind.”

Dear Valley bride: I’m going to have to side with your mom and your friends on this one. I’ve seen too many brides who are just too nervous on their wedding day to do their own hair. This is one of those things in which hiring a professional is a really good idea! Since you’ve been styling your own hair for awhile now, ask for recommendations. You can make an appointment to visit, discuss different styles, and do a dry run for the big day.

A professional stylist can give you advice about your hairstyle, cut, and color and point out what would best compliment your face shape, type of hair, and even the style of your gown. Make sure that you bring along your headpiece and any other hair adornments that you’re wearing. Don’t forget to ask for recommendations on how to condition your hair, too!
