The Numbers Game

The Wedding Guru Judy Lewis fields this week’s wedding questions. Today: Ditch the digits! When it comes to identifying guest tables at your wedding, how about a little creativity?

Many brides that I work with are concerned about being “unique.” A wedding is a wonderful place to exercise your creativity — so go ahead and think of unique ideas, I say!

A Valley bride asks: “Whenever I attend a wedding, there’s some kind of metal post with a number on it at the center of each table. I’d like to do something different for my centerpieces — because, frankly, I think those numbers take away from the loveliness of the décor! Any ideas?”

Dear Valley bride: There are lots of ways to make your table-numbering attractive. How about adding a little flair with Roman numeral-style lettering? You can also embroider the number on a piece of felt or velvet (or any material) that coordinates with your wedding colors. Or, try using numbers cut from wood — stain them for added sophistication.

If the numbering concept doesn’t suit your fancy, you can also label the tables in a very personalized way — some cute ideas involve using the names of cities, street names, colors, flowers, the word “love” in different languages, or even movie titles. The theme can reflect your (or your groom’s) occupation or hobby.

Are you artistic? Painting individual “canvases” or placing photographs of your guests on their table cards is always a fun idea. To inspire creativity, stop by your local crafts store. Think out-of-the-box and consider working with nonstandard materials or images. The lovely thing about designing unusual table cards is that they’re not only a reflection of you, but they also show your guests that you went the extra mile to make them feel special!
