Should I Have a Bridal Registry If I’m Planning an Expensive Destination Wedding?

One bride is planning her wedding in Paris — an already-costly affair. Should her pricey destination wedding affect the cost of the items on her registry?

Good brides are like good hostess — they keep their guests in mind. If you put yourself in the place of your guests and ask yourself how you would react to a situation, you can’t go wrong!

Dear Wedding Guru: “I’m getting married in the most romantic place in the world, in Paris. I know that attending a destination wedding can be expensive for my guests; is it still okay for me to have a wedding registry, which may have some expensive items listed on it?”

The Wedding Guru says: In a word, yes — it’s okay to have a registry. Your gift registry is not only for the guests attending the wedding, but also for those who won’t be traveling to Paris. If you’re that concerned, you may want to limit the number of pricey items on your registry. (Usually, the wider the price range, the better. Keep in mind that several guests might chip in to buy one expensive gift — you’ll have them covered if your registry offers pricier items.)

Some brides tell their guests that they consider their presence equivalent to a gift — and do not expect anything else. With the advent of today’s social media and technology, getting information out to a large number of people is much easier than it ever was before.
