Rambler’s Rest, Monroe

Best place to eat on the cheap in 2012: Rambler’s Rest, Monroe

Celebrate the Emerald Isle at this traditional Irish bar and restaurant. Deep mahogany walls, stone fireplaces, and hand-crafted stained glass pay tribute to Celtic style, and foster a welcoming atmosphere. “I felt that these areas were crying out for a good traditional Irish bar and restaurant,” says owner Oliver Cassels of his decision to open his first location in Monroe last year, and his second in Beekman last month. “The whole theme behind Rambler’s Rest is to become the neighborhood resting spot after a hard day’s work,” he says. Ground beef, carrots, onions, peas, and mashed potatoes create the top seller: Shepherd’s Pie ($14.99). Also earning prime spots on the “From the Homeland” portion of the menu are corned beef and cabbage ($14.99) and the Irish sampler ($12.99) — a mixture of shep’s pie, Irish sausages, and fries with curry sauce. Don’t walk away without trying the Gaelic chicken cordon bleu: diet-busting portions of breaded chicken cutlet stuffed with rashers of bacon and Swiss cheese, doused in creamy chicken velouté sauce ($17.99). Scrumptious seasonal selections like the Hudson Valley apple salad — locally sourced apples, toasted almonds, blue cheese, and field greens with apple cider white balsamic vinaigrette ($9.99, $13.99 with chicken) — fill your belly without emptying your wallet.
