My last two posts — about table cards and escort cards, respectively — inspired one bride to ask about the third type of cards at wedding receptions.
A Valley bride asks: “I need some help with the place cards at my wedding! What should I do?”
Dear Valley bride: Once your guests take their escort cards and locate their tables (with their handy-dandy table cards), you have two options: You can allow each guest to find his or her own spot at the table, or you can designate where each guest should sit. The advantage of “open seating” is that they’ll have the option to sit next to (or face away from) guests they prefer. Some brides prefer to alternate men and women at the table, while others opt to combine guests who may not know each other (yet). The place card is often used by brides to “match” single guests to one another.
The choice is yours. Whatever you decide, there are some interesting options for unique place card designs. Traditionally, the guest’s name is written in calligraphy on a stock card. To personalize it a bit, you can decorate the card with rhinestones and crystals, pressed flowers, or fresh flowers. You can even print the guest’s name directly on the menu (and save a tree in the process). Or, tie the card to the stem of each wine glass, napkin ring, or party favor.
