New York Fashion Week Runway Review: Tia Cibani Fall 2013 Collection

The Girl in the Check Scarf reviews the Tia Cibani Fall 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week

For fall 2013, Tia Cibani took the roaring ’20s and dipped it in gold and silver. The result? The twenties all grown up. The clothes are sophisticated, wearable, and, in the spirit of the era, exciting. Last season, I wrote about Tia’s impressive debut for her namesake line, Tia Cibani. This sophomore collection was a perfect follow-up, reinstating my previous claim that Tia is one to watch.

The collection started with white-collared shirts, tailored pants, and suit separates, and progressively became more feminine with the introduction of skirts and a lot of sparkle. The idea of sparkle-for-day was everywhere, and it made me fall in love with it. (And that’s a big deal for me, considering that my wardrobe is strictly basics.) I think it was the dazzling chainmail vest (photo 7; see gallery below) or the silver pants that put me over the edge. Tia was able to make silver and sparkles look professional and fun — a superb combo.

Leather details have popped up all over the place during fashion week, and I love the black collared shirt with a leather pocket (photo 2). It’s a subtle way to incorporate a popular trend. (Just FYI, this would make an awesome do-it-yourself project.) Speaking of trends, the peplum — otherwise known as “that one trend that hasn’t died in three seasons” — was once again on the runways. But this time, it got a bit of a makeover: Tia’s peplums only appear toward the back of the outfit, and they were cut asymmetrically.

The dresses moved like liquid, especially the smokey silk chiffon dress (photo 4). Micropleating made the dresses appear like they were gliding. It’s rare that a look makes me stop taking frantic notes, but everyone in the audience let out an “ahhhh” over a drop-dead gorgeous, form-fitting magenta dress with a cape-like layer of micropleats (photo 8).
