Nina Skarra’s fall 2013 collection focused on two main ideas: simplicity, and turning everyday clothing details into avant-garde pieces worthy of a double-take. In almost every look, there was at least one oversized detail that made the rest of the ensemble seem tame in comparison. However, I really liked this idea because the simplicity of the look lets the bold detail stand out. As far as avant-garde details, collars were oversized, short sleeves were whimsical and perfectly poufy, wrist cuffs were elongated, and beautiful knit sweaters had huge ruffles at the wrists. The collection was really on-trend as far as color scheme goes, as it heavily used black, red, and white. The combination of these three colors has been everywhere this season, and it’s a really easy trend to take part in using your already-existing wardrobe.
Skarra really played with the idea of ‘monotone’ – nearly every look was one color head-to-toe. This is a really easy trend to test-drive for yourself. If you’re looking for a style update, just try wearing head-to-toe black, blue, or beige and try mixing textures to add interest.
My favorite pieces in the collection were Skarra’s beautiful gowns in red and black. Like many of the other pieces in the collection, the gowns had highly texturized, almost 3D details. One of the gowns seemed to be almost quilted, and a bold red gown had a bodice made of up fabric ‘swirls’ that reminded me of felted wool.
A Norwegian illustrator and graphic designer by trade, Skarra started her line in 2008 after realizing her passion for fashion and textiles. This was Skarra’s first showing at New York Fashion Week, and I’m excited to see her future work!
