Praised by Rolling Stone magazine for its atmosphere and performance lineup, the seventh annual Mountain Jam festival, taking place at Hunter Mountain, has quickly become one of the area’s premier musical events.
Each year the fest grows larger. Case in point: the 2011 installment currently showcases 55 bands on four stages over the course four days (June 2-5).
Mountain Jam is co-presented by radio station 100.1 WDST and musician Warren Haynes, so of course fans can expect performances by Haynes’ own Gov’t Mule and the Warren Haynes Band. Kentucky-based rock group My Morning Jacket is headlining the show this year, and other top-name acts include Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Mavis Staples, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Hot Tuna, the Avett Brothers, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.
In addition, a slew of local bands will take the stage, including ska/reggae outfit the Big Takeover, Woodstock-based Voodelic, Uncle Rock for the kiddies (Saturday morning features children’s performers and activities), and RoyalHeartSound, who kicks off the party Thursday evening, among others.
Beyond music, a variety of vendors selling jewelry, clothes, art, and food will have their space. Get your eco-conscious groove on at the Awareness Village, which hosts booths from philanthropic, health, and eco-friendly companies.
