One of the best places to see fall foliage is in our very own backyard. Mohonk Mountain House, a 19th-century Victorian castle resort, is not only a National Historic Landmark, it has also been named one of the best resorts by Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure year after year. It’s hard to think of anyone who would not love this resort, whose awards encompass categories such as family, spa, wine, and tennis, among others.
The inclusive resort, which has been owned by the same family since its inception in 1869, was named “One of the Top Destinations in the World” by National Geographic Traveler magazine, and it’s easy to see why. Not only has it been perfectly maintained, but updates are harmonious with the property’s history. The resort features an exquisitely crafted woodwork interior, fireplaces carved from Shawangunk stone, antique furnishings, endless hallways and porches but also has every modern-day amenity.
The price tag on a room may seem hefty, but considering it includes meals (the buffet breakfast is a must), afternoon tea, and wide array of activities—not to mention the low cost of getting there—it is actually quite a bargain.
|Hike Skytop Road and climb up Sky Top Tower for a 360-degree view of the ’Gunks and to get a true appreciation for the Mountain House’s size and splendor.
|It’s hard to beat the long, winding drive into the property. Around the last bend, the resort, its beautifully landscaped grounds, and Lake Mohonk come into view.
|The unbeatable view from Sky Top Tower makes it clear why the Shawangunk region was named one of the Earth’s “Last Great Places” by The Nature Conservancy.
You can fill your day with activities ranging from totally relaxing (like a “Mohonk Red” massage in the spa or a dip in the outdoor heated mineral pool) to drop-dead exhausting (there are 85 miles of hiking trails, including the daunting Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze).
