Meet Our December 2016 Hero: Brenda Winkler Goldfarb

A local humanitarian that thrives on giving back to the community

For Brenda Winkler Goldfarb, it’s not fundraising — it’s ‘fun’raising. An Orange County resident for nearly 30 years, she has happily had her hands on more volunteer projects and charities than you can count.

Winkler Goldfarb has been ‘fun’raising for the YWCA Orange County Cancer Services Program, which provides free breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screenings to residents of New York who are un- or underinsured, since 2007, organizing various community-based activities to raise funds that go toward assisting folks in receiving these medical services.

Learning from the example set by her parents — something they call the “Winkler philosophy” — Winkler Goldfarb believes giving is always better. “People are generous and often don’t know how to channel their generosity, so volunteering helps the giving and those that need to be given,” she says.

One continuous project she has worked on is raising money to give teddy bears to local children who would either not receive a holiday gift due to family economic hardship or are clinically or emotionally challenged every holiday season for the last 16 years. In addition, Winkler Goldfarb assists in organizing an annual donation drive providing goods for St. Patrick’s Soup Kitchen and the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.

“The most obvious reason to volunteer is the desire to help others, but for me it is more than that, it also means making my life better,” explains Winkler Goldfarb. Most recently, she chaired the YWCA’s annual fundraiser, BRAzaar, which supports local women in their fight against breast cancer, the success of which Winkler Goldfarb is quite proud of.
