From salmon to scallops and everything in between, these local shops have the best catch around.

From salmon to scallops and everything in between, these Hudson Valley fish markets have the best catches around.

There’s something endearing about grocery shopping at specialty stores. Sure, supermarkets, with their aisles upon aisles of goods, are convenient. Yet they’re hardly the best, especially where fish is concerned. Instead of falling victim to the impersonal ease of prepackaged supermarket salmon and shrimp, consider venturing over to one of the Hudson Valley’s many fish markets instead. Not only are the pickings as fresh as can be, but the service is personalized to each and every customer too. So the next time you need eight perfect pieces of tilapia for a dinner party or crave a really great cut of cod for yourself, your local fishmonger will be there to help.

Four Maples Fish

Hidden in a strip plaza on Route 376, Four Maples sells top quality fresh and frozen seafood to the general public and local restaurateurs. The shop, which has been around since 1975, stocks seasonal favorites and year-round essentials. In summer, look out for king crab, lobster tails, and little neck clams.

Gadaleto’s Seafood Market

Perhaps the most reputable of all the fish markets in the Valley (it is the winner of multiple Best of Hudson Valley Readers’ Pick awards), Gadaleto’s is beloved for its shoppable seafood fare and accompanying restaurant. Since 1945, the Gadaleto family has made a name for itself as the go-to destination for fresh fish. The market boasts the largest selection of wild caught and sustainably farmed seafood in the Hudson Valley, making it well worth the drive to New Paltz.

Hookline Fish Company

While it’s not a fish market in the traditional sense, Hookline deserves a mention for its signature smoked salmon. Visit the retail store on Gourmet Row in Kingston for a sample of the Northwest-style fish, which comes in a variety of cuts and flavor levels. Add it to pasta, omelets, or your next brunch spread.

Hudson Valley Seafood

Although it began as a distribution program and resource for restaurants in the region, Hudson Valley Seafood has since expanded to a brick and mortar store as well. Located in the old train station in Central Valley, the market serves seafood staples like scallops and swordfish, while allowing visitors to sample more unique options, like Cownose Ray wing. The store participates in a number of local farmers markets, so keep an eye out for its booth during weekend summertime jaunts.

Sally’s Fish Market

For over eighty years and three generations, Sally’s has been serving up ocean fresh eats to Hudson Valley residents. The team behind the counter knows customers on a first name basis and has their go-to orders memorized.  First-timers are welcome too, and can order from the diverse spread, which rotates often and includes clams, mussels, oysters, lobster, branzino, and more.

Sea Deli

The Kingston standby got its start in 1974 as a small town family business. Since then, not much has changed. The shop continues to serve fresh seafood, which the owners purchase in New York City twice a week. Look out for seasonal specialties if you want to try something new, or stick with classics like oysters, calamari, and catfish. If you’d rather have someone else prepare your fish, grab a table at the onsite restaurant or place a delivery order on Tuesday through Friday during the week.
