Earth Wise Radio Show Airs in Millbrook, NY and Beyond

Earth on air: a new Millbrook-based radio show spreads the environmental word

As we observe Earth Day’s 42nd anniversary, the call to raise awareness for the protection of our planet is stronger than ever — and residents in the Hudson Valley hear the signal loud and clear.

This January, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies and WAMC Northeast Public Radio debuted Earth Wise, a radio program that examines weighty environmental concerns — such as hydraulic fracturing and climate change — in layman’s terms. The two-minute segments, which air twice daily from the Cary Institute’s headquarters in Millbrook, are hosted by CIES president and esteemed ecologist Dr. William H. Schlesinger. “It’s been great fun,” says Schlesinger. “We’re putting out relevant, unbiased, timely information on environmental issues up and down the Hudson Valley.” (And beyond: As of press time, the show had been picked up by stations as far away as Texas, California, and Alaska.)

This month’s Earth Day segment is especially meaningful to Schlesinger: “At the first Earth Day in 1970, I was a college student at Dartmouth — and the campus Earth Day coordinator,” he laughs. “[This show] will be a little more personal than many of the other segments, and reflect on what Earth Day is all about.”
