Named in 1683 for Mary of Modena, Duchess of York (they spelled it without a “t” then) and not for its Dutch heritage as you might assume, the county is located halfway between New York City and Albany. Travel here and you’ll notice a dual personality: agriculture in the north and a commuter culture in the south. Top schools such as Marist, Vassar, Bard, and the Culinary Institute of America call it home, while numerous public historic homes preserve the area’s identity.
