Cozying up in Cold Spring

The Pig Hill Inn

73 Main St, Cold Spring
845.265.9247; www.pighillinn.com

The Pig Hill Inn, situated on Cold Spring’s vibrant Main Street, radiates repose. Often acting as a quiet getaway for tourists from New York City after a day of hiking and antiquing, the inn’s 200-year-old façade holds nine intimate lodgings best characterized by their given names like Victorian Elegance, Tranquility, or Enchantment.

Each room in the 1825 three-story inn is furnished with antiques, as well as reproduction period pieces creating a Georgian-era atmosphere. Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves only add to that effect, and the Jacuzzis in two of the rooms offer a romantic escape. If a particular piece of furniture catches your eye, you might be able to take it home as most of Pig Hill’s furnishings are for sale.

Vera Keil, the Inn’s proprietor, is incredibly accommodating and knowledgeable on the surrounding area. Her advice can guide you to charming attractions, from antique stores to ice cream and coffee shops, as well as a host of outdoor excursions, like Storm King Mountain and Little Stony Point, for hikers of all experience levels.

Pig Hill’s common area is peaceful, and has plenty of art and books to occupy your mind after an exciting day. It might be hard to find a more recuperating retreat than coming home to Pig Hill’s peaceful atmosphere and a cup of tea.

The Breakfast

Pig Hill’s country-style breakfast caters to most, if not every, whim. You can enjoy your meal in bed, in the glass Victorian conservatory, or in their outdoor patio area. The menu changes daily, but a variety of fresh fruit and pastries are available, as well as pancakes, French toast, and eggs made to your liking.

What to Do Nearby

If you’re looking for an intense hike and rock scramble with a breathtaking payoff, head to Breakneck Ridge. At nearly three miles long, and taking approximately four hours to complete, it is not for the weak-hearted. For a more laid-back day out, go to Little Stony Point for a short, scenic stroll to a picturesque beach and clifftop view of the Hudson River.

If indoor activities are more your speed, check out the shops and antiques stores on Main Street or visit DIA: Beacon just up the river. (3 Beekman St, Beacon, 845.440.0100)
