Choosing Wedding Cake Colors: To Match or Not Match?

One bride-to-be finds herself in a color quandary when choosing her wedding cake

Editor’s note: We’re starting 2015 on the right foot — and it’s leading us straight into the wedding cake tasting room! This entire month, we’re devoting our Wedding Guru posts to all things cake. Bon appétit!

It’s safe to say that most prospective brides have never chosen a wedding cake before, and with an entire wedding to plan, determining the details that will result in the “best” cake for the& big day can become a daunting task.

“Does my cake necessarily have to match my wedding colors?” — Color Blind Bride

Dear Color Blind Bride:
The most important thing about your wedding cake is how it tastes. Matching colors or not, it should at least look appetizing. And though it’s great to have a wedding color scheme, when it comes to your cake, you may need to back off a bit. That said: If you must match, make sure you limit the color to the decorations — but keep the cake itself either white or ivory.

Though I commend brides who go bold with their color scheme, a cake with bright orange or blue frosting may not look very appetizing to your guests (even if the cake tastes great)! Here’s a good tip: stick to natural flavors (like berries) rather than food coloring, which often results in a peculiar taste the icing.
