By the Numbers: Electric Cars and Windham Mountain’s Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Shock value: A look at the statistics regarding electric cars

In January, Windham Mountain unveiled Greene County’s very first electric vehicle charging station. “Both plug-ins were in use all weekend,” says spokesperson Beth Barry about the kick-off of this new free service.

Electric cars have hardly taken over the roads, but experts predict that we will soon see more green vehicles, including plug-in hybrids. Here’s a look at electric cars by the numbers:

  • 2 Metro-North stations about to open charging stations (Bedford and Chappaqua)
  • 100 miles Average driving range on one charge
  • 520 Electric charging stations in New York State
  • 15,000 Electric charging stations nationwide
  • 17,500 U.S. sales of plug-in cars in 2011
  • 53,000 U.S. sales of plug-in cars in 2012
  • $4.4 million Amount New York State awarded last year to build 325 new charging stations
