Being an attendant in a bridal party is an honor (hence the expression “honor attendant”). It is also an obligation. It behooves the bride to think carefully about whom she picks, because there are responsibilities and expenditures attached.
A Hudson Valley bridesmaid asks: “I probably should have said ‘no.’ I just didn’t realize how expensive it would be to be a bridesmaid! Although I’m flattered that my best friend asked me to be in her wedding party, I’m getting overwhelmed by the amount of money I need to spend on her. My question is that, all things considered, do I also have to give my friend a wedding present?”

The Wedding Guru answers: Yes, it does get expensive, but unfortunately I can’t let you off the hook. A wedding gift is a must-do for a bridesmaid! However, covering the cost of a bachelorette party and a shower are optional, as is an engagement gift. If you and the other bridesmaids decide to throw a bachelorette party, keep in mind that you can control how much is spent. If your budget is starting to break, how about a luncheon at a moderately priced restaurant, as opposed to, say, a night in the city with limo service? It really is the thought that counts!
