Ashley Diaz and Jake Rotunno’s unique engagement was fit for a princess — Princess Zelda, that is.

Oswego native Rotunno popped the question to Diaz, a soon-to-be veterinarian from Plattekill, on a day that “started out like any regular Thursday,” she says. The couple’s original plans to go hiking were spoiled by inclement weather when Rotunno suggested Diaz play The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on his computer. Despite her love of the game, Diaz had trouble clearing the first dungeon and beating the game’s evil boss. She had no idea that saving the princess would set off screens of sentimental text directed at her.
Rotunno, a computer programmer, altered the game to display “Will you marry me?” with a choice of yes or no. When Diaz turned around, she saw Rotunno down on one knee holding a ring. “I still can’t believe he actually hacked the game to propose to me,” Diaz says. “It was absolutely perfect.”
The Marist College grads will not wed until 2014 and are still on the hunt for the perfect location. They would like to find a venue with scenic views of the Hudson River, a sight they grew fond of while attending school together. To celebrate their love of games and unique engagement story, the couple hopes to include subtle nods to the Legend of Zelda games during the wedding.
