Going to the grocery store is always a love it or hate it sort of deal. On the plus side, it means fresh food for your cupboards and refrigerator. On the downside, it’s a time suck that all too often drains your bank account and leaves you tired after an hour or more of strolling up and down the aisles.

Fortunately, the grocery stores of the Hudson Valley are here to add just the right dose of artisanal flavor to your next food run. While we can’t promise that they’ll do great things for your wallet, we can say that the shops transform the oft-dreaded grocery store treks into downright enjoyable experiences with local products, lovely layouts, and, if you’re lucky, a gourmet taste test or two.

So pack your reusable bags and take a final look at your empty pantry. It’s time to (grocery) shop local!

Adams Fairacre Farms

Kingston, Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Wappinger

The powerhouse of the Hudson Valley’s supermarket scene, Adams is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its abundance of regional treats and beautifully curated interiors. With four locations along the river, and a location coming to Middletown in spring of 2023, Adams extends its grocery store offerings to include bakeries with pastries made daily, coffee stands for freshly ground beans, and butcher departments to score the perfect cut.

On top of that, the local grocery store chain is a must for gift shopping, thanks to its in-house gift, flower, and sweet shops. Before you go, check on the department options at the store nearest you, since the offerings and specialties may differ. The Poughkeepsie shop, for instance, hosts a café, landscaping service, and greenhouses, while the Wappinger location boasts an expanded prepared food section and a rich selection of gifts and housewares.

Beacon Natural Market places a strong emphasis on green living. Be sure to check out the shop’s selection of eco-friendly household products including brands such as Seventh Generation, ECOS, Ecover, Biokleen, Meyers, and more. For those looking to reduce their plastic consumption, the market invites shoppers to bring their own containers to the bulk section of the store to stock up on organic, fair-trade coffee and fresh almond or peanut butter.

A mainstay in the lower Hudson Valley since 1973, DeCicco’s began as a tiny shop in the Bronx and transformed into the artisanal supermarket that locals love. Head to any of the stores for Italian-inspired sweets at the bakery, a curated selection of Hudson Valley beers, and fresh mozzarella that is made in-store every single day. In addition to producing many goods in-house, DeCicco’s also carries a number of Hudson Valley brands, including Coffee Labs Roasters and Rockland Bakery. Plus, craft beer fans can fill growlers of fresh releases from local producers at one of DeCicco’s taps.

As for onsite eats, the family chain’s Armonk, Brewster, Larchmont, Millwood, and Somers grocery stores house healthy, nutritious juice bars. On top of that, all the locations serve sushi made fresh daily from skilled chefs. If you’re craving award-winning pizza, head to the Brewster location and pick up a made-to-order pie (or two) from the wood-fired brick oven.

Also at the co-op, a deli entices with lunch-ready eats like homemade hummus and a rotating selection of hearty soups. Plus, shop high-quality skincare products like lotions, creams, and sunscreens.

While you can shop at the store even if you’re not a member, the additional discounts that members receive at the register are a worthy incentive to opt into the yearly $40/person or $55/family fee.

An easy detour in Dutchess County, Taste NY is operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County thanks to a grant from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Inside the quaint grocery store, which is open for business throughout the year, visitors can browse locally produced milk, eggs, cheeses, pastries, granola, and apple cider. As far as pantry goods go, the regional maple syrups, honeys, and jams are not to be missed.

Pick up a parcel of farm-raised meat or poultry while you’re there, then channel your inner chef at home. From June to October, be sure to check out the outdoor farmers’ market with even more fresh produce and farm goodies.
