What to Do This Weekend: October 14-16, 2016

LGBT farm-day fun, feature films in Woodstock, and a puppy costume parade that’s too cute to miss

Hellooooo impending weekend. While you may already be readying your requisite uniform of pjs and bunny slippers, we recommend ripping yourself off the couch and getting a pair of pants on, because whether you’re a dog-owning Halloween lover or indie-film buff, there’s plenty to see and do right here in the Valley this Friday-Sunday.

Halloween Pets on Parade, Castleton-on-Hudson

Who knew that spooky season would yield one of the cutest events of the year? On Sunday, the 12th annual Halloween Pets on Parade at Goold Orchards will feature plenty of costume-clad pups ready to play and celebrate the holiday. Between the furry super heroes, curly wig-topped Dachshunds, cowboy canines, and crowned-princess Pugs, we can promise that you won’t find any tricks at this pooch party. Just plenty of doggy treats.

Angry Orchard Harvest Fest, Walden

Ready to hang up your lederhosen after another beer-soaked Oktoberfest? Angry Orchard will be hosting an all-day cider-and-song celebration on Saturday, with arcade games, cider house tours, and live performances from world-renowned artists Matisyahu and G. Love & Special Sauce. And while an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a wood-fired pizza from Stoked doesn’t hurt either. The food truck will join five others at the event to fuel you through a couple more drinks.

For Unbiased Fun

The ultimate fall farm fest wouldn’t be complete without tractor-drawn hay rides, bonfires, and great food. Luckily, you can find all of that and more at Sprout Creek Farm this weekend. Dabble in a competitive game of Barnyard Match hosted by local drag queen/baker extraordinaire Trixie Starr, or rock out to The Roundabout Ramblers. The event is BYOB, so bring a bottle, your boo, and while you’re at it, your coziest blanket, too.

For Fall Foodies

Flavors of Haverstraw Food Crawl, Haverstraw

Bite into Haverstraw’s vivid food scene in a sampling/walking tour that’ll take you not only through the village’s downtown strip, but around the world as well. Small, tapas-style plates await you from nearly 20 restaurants, featuring authentic foods from Ecuador, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, France, Italy, and more. Best of all, plates are only $3-6, so you can immerse yourself into different cultures without breaking the bank.

For Film Lovers

Woodstock Film Festival, Woodstock

Sure, Woodstock is notorious for its monumental musical history (see: newly announced Nobel honoree and former resident Bob Dylan), but once a year, the artsy HV hub is turns its attention to another medium. The 17th annual Woodstock Film Festival kicks off Thursday night (see our chat with the head programmer, who offers her must-see picks, here), spanning into Sunday with more than 120 independent shorts, full-length features, animations, and documentaries screening at venues across Woodstock, Rhinebeck, Kingston, Saugerties, and Rosendale. With stars and directors including everyone from Alec Baldwin to Amber Tamblyn, it’s a veritable Cannes-do event.
