Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club

Share

Located in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains — in the village of Sloatsburg — is Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club, a luxurious wellness retreat dreamed up by Michael Bruno, the founder of Tuxedo Hudson Company. Bruno envisioned a rustic oasis — well, rustic for city dwellers — where friends can come together to either escape the daily grind or take on some adventurous outdoor pursuits in the 70,000 acres of nearby parkland in Harriman State Park and Sterling Forest.

The first phase of the lodging at this rustic-chic compound opened in January of this year, after four historic homes were transformed into guest houses. Known locally as the historic Waldron Houses, the buildings date back to the mid-1800s and are perfectly suited to house a group of friends under one roof for the weekend. Each house, exclusive to one group, features 3 to 5 bedrooms with ensuite bath and a spacious living room.

What to Do Nearby

• Explore the many hiking trails of Harriman State Park.

• Wander Storm King Art Center’s 500 acres, a half-hour’s drive away.

• Grab a bite and brew at Rhodes North Tavern in Sloatsburg or Dottie Audrey’s for baked goods and lunch in Tuxedo Park.

• Enjoy an outing on the greens at Spook Rock Golf Course.

• Take the kids to Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park.

• Shop or play at Palisades Center in West Nyack.

• Take in a show at the historic Lafayette Theatre in Suffern.

Start your day at the expanding organic market packed with fresh produce from their farm in Chester. “When complete, it will be like a mini Whole Foods with juice, salad, and coffee bars,” says Bruno. Once you have your morning fix, head out on a biking, hiking, or kayaking excursion — either on your own or with the Valley Rock Mountain Club (you can bring your own bike, or rent one from the on-site bike barn). On-property fitness options include a 75-foot-long pool and a 7,000 sq ft gym with a spin studio. In the evening, dine at the VR Bar & Grill, at the center of the property, and enjoy a cocktail while sitting at the fire pit before crawling into bed.

Currently under construction is a dining lounge in an 1840 hook and ladder firehouse, and Bruno is planning a larger hotel on the property in the future.
