‘The Post’ and ‘The Greatest Showman’ Generate Millions for NY

The two new films are part of the state’s long-running relationship with the film and television industry.

The production of Stephen Spielberg’s new film The Post and Dreamworks’ The Greatest Showman together led to a $108 million boost to New York’s local economy, according to recent data from the studio. These films hired more than 9,000 total local workers, who took home more than $75 million in wages.

“New York is one of our nation’s most iconic locations, home to some of the film and television industry’s legendary performances and scenes. I’m proud of our ongoing contribution to the local economy and support for so many workers and businesses in the state,” said MPAA Chairman and CEO Charles H. Rivkin. “The Post and The Greatest Showman demonstrate the incredible benefits film and television productions bring to local communities. I’m grateful the state legislature and Governor Cuomo understand this and continue to help make this happen.”

U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8) thanked the MPAA and the entertainment industry as a whole “for their leadership in driving good-paying union jobs that pump millions of dollars into our local economy and helps hard working New Yorkers take care of their families. Governor Cuomo should also be commended for his stalwart leadership in this regard.”

The Greatest Showman contributed more than $69.5 million to the local economy and hired nearly 7,000 New Yorkers for the production, who took home more than $48.5 million in wages. The Post spent a month on location, contributing more than $39 million to the local economy and spending $26.4 million on New York employees’ wages.

A significant portion of production spending for both films benefitted a wide array of in-state businesses and industries. Key expenditures included: rentals and purchases for set decoration and production supplies; transportation, including truck and car rentals; hardware and lumber supplies; catering and other food supplies; and lodging.
