It’s hard to beat the allure of a day trip to one of the Hudson Valley’s riverside towns (Newburgh, Nyack, or Piermont, anyone?). Yet as many a local can attest, some of the best escapes can be found further inland. Take Suffern, for instance. Located primely on the border between New York and New Jersey, Suffern is a hop and a skip from Harriman State Park, a veritable dream for hikers in the region. Plus, did we mention the restaurant row that exists on Lafayette Avenue, the village’s “main street?” Pair the town’s top-notch dining with its charming local shopping scene, and visitors have everything they need to spend a full day (and night) in town.

Blink and you’ll miss the entrance to this trailhead. It’s located on Route 59 on the way out of Suffern toward I-87, so keep your eyes peeled for the trail sign on the right side of the road. Parking is available under the underpass, and there’s generally plenty of it, since many locals head straight to Harriman State Park for plentiful treks nearby. Once on the trail, expect a tough trek that will have you stepping and rock scrambling your way up the mountain. Don’t give up though! The clearing at the top offers a bird’s eye view of Suffern and surrounding areas that’s most definitely worth a photo op.
