Ride the Rails

One of the Hudson Valley’s best summer activities: taking a train ride

Travel back in time aboard the Catskill Mountain Railroad. Opening for the season on May 25, the service takes riders on a five-mile round-trip journey through Mount Tremper and Boiceville. (The 12-mile loop between Phoenicia and Boiceville is currently unavailable due to track damage from 2011’s Hurricane Irene. The volunteer-run group is working toward restoring the lines.) The loop offers visitors stunning views of the mountains, the Esopus Creek, and local wildlife. Also available is the group’s Kingston City Limited line, which takes riders on a 45-minute journey through historic Kingston. Special trips for kids are offered aboard the Lollipop Express Train, which is decorated with balloons and — naturally — lots of lollipops. Be sure to stop off at the Empire State Railway Museum in Phoenicia. Housed in the circa-1900 railroad depot, the site details the history of steam travel in the region from the latter part of the 19th century through the 1940s.
