Random Acts of Kindness Day, a celebration that began in 1995, returns on February 17. Read on for five ways that you can get in the spirit and give back to the HV community, as recommended by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.
1. Shop local and support small businesses.
With countless cute Main Streets to stroll, it’s easy to buy homewares, clothes, and more from small mom-and-pop stores. For more of our favorites, visit hvmag.com/shoppable-trips.

2. Cook a meal for someone who is struggling.
There is a wealth of community kitchens in the area doing great work for those in need—and they could always use an extra set of hands. Spend some time helping the Columbia County Recovery Kitchen (Hudson), People’s Place Community Café (Kingston), or the Guild of St. Margaret (Middletown). Crunched for time? Cook at home and bring the finished product to the closest free food fridge.
3. Donate used books to a library.
Between the dozens of library system locations (MidHudson, Ramapo Catskill, Westchester), there are plenty of spots that would be more than happy to give your favorite used books a second life. Or, drop your pre-loved titles at a Little Free Library outpost—find the closest one to you at littlefreelibrary.org/map.
4. Be kind to people in the service industry.
Our region is known for being a foodie hotspot. Whether you’re dining at one of our James Beard Award-nominated restaurants—such as Lil Deb’s Oasis in Hudson, Harana Market in Accord, or Casa Susanna in Leeds—or a neighborhood favorite, be patient and respectful to those serving you.

5. Make kindness the norm.
According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAKF), being kind is not only good for the community but also your well-being. Benefits such as elevated energy, serotonin, and oxytocin levels; decreased stress, anxiety, and blood pressure; and even increased longevity are experienced by individuals who regularly practice being good to others.
