June 5-23 Landscape paintings by Woodstock artist Donald Elder are on view at Woodstock’s Elena Zang Gallery this month. The show features approximately 20 works, all executed over the last 18 months, which focus on the “play of light in nature,” according to Elder. He’s sold upwards of 300 million records in 14 languages; every 30 seconds, one of his romantic hits (“For All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,” “Always on My Mind,” “When I Fall in Love”) is played on a radio station somewhere across the globe. Author of the best-selling novel The Keep, writer Jennifer Egan’s latest work, A Visit from the Goon Squad, gets the theatrical treatment this month as part of the Insights and Revelations Performance Series. Portions of the novel — which chronicles the lives of an aging punk rocker and the passionate but troubled younger woman who works for him — are given a staged reading by professional actors. The performance also includes a musical interlude by singer-songwriter (and New Rochelle native) Josh Rutt. June 17 Hudson Valley music venues seem to be filled with British rock stars lately; over the past few months, Ray Davies, Elvis Costello, and Mark Knopfler have all played to packed concert halls in the region. This month, guitarist Jeff Beck joins his compatriots when his worldwide “Emotion & Commotion” tour makes a stop at the Ulster Performing Arts Center. A onetime member of the ’60s band the Yardbirds (along with good buddy Eric Clapton), Beck is a legendary — and hugely influential — guitarist who’s won five Grammys for Best Rock Instrumental (the most recent of which was awarded this past January). Garden enthusiasts and architecture buffs alike should mark June 12 — the date of Putnam County’s Secret Garden Tour — on their calendars. Private gardens from Carmel to Cold Spring open their gates to the public for this self-guided tour, showing off formal designs, flowering landscapes, water gardens, plots of vegetables and herbs — everything a horticulturalist could ask for.
