Long Live the Queen
May 7: The wildly popular Met Live in HD series continues with their first ever staging of Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux. The final installment in the Tudor trilogy, this opera centers around an aging Queen Elizabeth I and the struggle she endures when compelled to sign the death warrant of Roberto Devereux, the man she loves. Celebrated bel canto soprano Sondra Radvanovsky sings Elizabeth, after having tackled the title roles in the previous two operas of the trilogy. 1 p.m. Pre-opera lecture at 12:30 p.m. $27, $25 members, $20 under 12. A Case of the Blues
May 13: Five-time Grammy nominee Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stephen Stills bring their expansive knowledge of blues to a collaboration with famed Chicago rock/blues keyboardist Barry Goldberg (Electric Flag, Bob Dylan at Newport). May 21: After being shuttered for several years due to renovations, the James Vanderpoel House is ready to throw open its doors once again. Now under the care of the Columbia County Historical Society, the Federal-style mansion at one point belonged to a prominent lawyer and politician. A variety of paintings, portraits, and historic painted furniture are on display in the 19th-century house. Thru Aug. 14: Art can manifest itself in myriad different forms, and furniture is no exception. In Hudson Hewn: New York Furniture Now, works by nearly a dozen contemporary artisans are on display, drawing inspiration from bygone eras as well as the constancy of nature. The pieces are made by nearly a dozen local artists who hail from places like Salt Point, Ulster Park, Woodstock, Kingston, and Shokan, as well as other areas around the state.
