Emerging Talent
Feb. 27-July 31: Last year for the first time, the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art put out an open call for regional artists to submit their works for a new exhibition called WORD. Fittingly, the only requirement was that the piece features one word or more and that it explores, through contemporary style, how words can affect the people at whom they are directed. Close to 140 artists applied, and 45 were selected to have their artworks appear in the juried exhibit along with pieces by established artists like Beatrice Coron, Dylan Graham, and Anne Hamilton. Off to the Opera
Mar. 4 & 6: Based on the beloved children’s book by Maurice Sendek, Higglety Pigglety, Pop! is a light-hearted, one-act opera that tells the tale of a small terrier named Jennie. The pooch believes that there must be more to life than the ordinary existence she leads, and embarks on wild adventures in search of it. The second part of the performance ventures into the world of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, condensing the story of a nobleman’s search for an imprisoned princess into one act. Sweet Valley
Mar. 13: The Valley is home to myriad flora and fauna, much of which can be used in delicious ways. Now that spring is just around the corner, that means nature is ready to start providing maple sap with which Valleyites can create their own maple syrup. For those who have never made their own but would like to take a crack at it, the Greenburgh Nature Center holds a Maple Sugaring at Home class, during which the techniques for harvesting and manipulating the sap into edible sugary goodness are taught. Participants also learn various other ways — besides slathering it on pancakes — that syrup can be used in the kitchen. 2 p.m. $8. The Bat is Back
Mar. 21: It would be easy for rock musician Meat Loaf to rest on his laurels: he’s sold more than 43 million CDs, and appeared in 50 television shows and feature films, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Fight Club. But the multi-platinum rocker has definitely still got it. This evening performance includes selections from his wildly popular Bat Out of Hell trilogy (which includes Bat Out of Hell, Back Into Hell, and The Monster Is Loose). 8 p.m. $64-$119.
