Our “Ultimate Outdoor Adventures” cover story last month seemed to get a lot of people thinking about exploring the great outdoors. But what if you’re still not sure where to go or what to do? The New York State Outdoor Guides Association can link you up with a state-certified guide, whether you want to go fishing, hiking, hunting, canoeing, rafting, climbing — even skiing and snowshoeing. “The biggest difference about using a guide is that they really have such vast local knowledge; they’ve been there and can show you so many different things,” says NYSOGA First Vice President Scott Locorini. All types of people utilize guides, says Locorini. “In the past 10 years, we’ve seen a huge increase in family inquiries. But the majority of people who contact us are looking for a one-on-one experience.”
Prices range dramatically — from $50 to $300 a day, depending on the guide’s experience. And you don’t need to know exactly what you want to do. “Most people fill out the form on our Web site with as much information as they have,” says Locorini. “Then various guides will contact them and offer up different choices.” For more information, call 866-469-7642 or visit www.NYSOGA.org.
