Mount Peter

Great homespun spot for a day trip.

This welcoming, family-oriented winter playground features skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. It has a nifty history: Mount Peter was started in 1936 by Macy’s department store to show off and sell their ski fashions. It’s said to be the oldest operating ski area in New York State and among the few remaining family-run ski sites in the nation.

Newbies love its free, hour-long group beginner lessons (on weekends and holidays) for skiers and snowboarders. The ski spot offers snowmaking, night hours, a terrain park, and a quad lift. It features popular racing and development programs, too.

Tube-riders can thrill to the 600-foot ride downhill, then head back up on the conveyor carpet ride to get set for another fun slide. And the littlest kiddies aren’t forgotten, either, at Mount Peter — its Little Tikes Tubing Play Area offers a small hill that’s perfect for pint-sized fun.

Where to Dine & Stay

The Warwick area offers lots of B&Bs and cozy lodging choices. Among them: The Warwick Valley Bed and Breakfast Inn is a restored Colonial Revival home built in the early 1900s. A full breakfast is served (vegan and vegetarian dietary requests are honored, too). Licensed massage therapists are even available for guest bookings at the inn.

For dinner (or brunch on Sunday), The Iron Forge Inn presents country dining in a Revolutionary-era home built in 1760. The owner is a Culinary Institute of America graduate who offers a Modern American menu served in five cozy dining areas; there’s also a tap room for more casual fare.
