Look What Paula Poundstone's Cats Dragged In

The veteran standup is coming to Poughkeepsie, armed with kitty stories and spontaneous wit

“Yes, I have 14 cats,” admits Paula Poundstone. “You know why? I had 16, and two died.” The renowned comedian, actress, and NPR panelist is trying to swear off her practice of pet-purchasing this year, in hopes that she can one day fulfill her dream of moving from the West Coast to a farm in New Jersey without going through the burdensome process of transporting excess felines.

Fans and unaware onlookers alike will be treated to similar quirky or ironic stories about the ins and out of daily life if they head to her performance at The Bardavon in Poughkeepsie this Friday, June 24. Poundstone does about 90 shows on the road a year, and there’s no question that she has a bankable act—37 years worth of one, in fact—but what makes her performances especially unique is how much they vary from venue to venue. “I might ask the audience what they do for a living and use that to set my sails,” she offers.

But don’t fret; Poundstone negotiates these interchanges without ever deliberately mocking those she’s surveying. This is probably because her live crowds have proved to be an excellent counterpoint and source of fuel for her wit. “The audience is like my best friend,” she says, “and I miss them when I’m away.”
