Come Sail Away
March 14: Ships, Maps, and Pirates With spring break just around the corner, maybe you’re planning a family trip to a remote island in the sun. Or, if you’re penny-pinching like the rest of us, maybe not. But with a little imagination, you can still get that island adventure feeling by sailing over to the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy. At this Family Sunday arts event, you’ll learn how to create everything necessary to navigate the high seas. Slap on some sunscreen (just for the smell of it), then create a majestic pirate flag, draw out a map that leads to buried treasure, and — best of all — design a dashing pirate hat to top it off. Tricks and Treats
March 20: Circo Comedia March goes in like a lion and out like a lamb, the adage goes. But the folks at Emelin Theatre want to keep you roaring till the end — with laughter, that is. The hilarious antics and thrilling acrobatics performed by this Montreal duo are similar to what you would find under the Big Top. Swim with the Fishes
March 21: Odd Creatures of the Deep: Slippery, Slimy, Scaly Animals of the Hudson River The Hudson is full of marine life, from slithery eels to colorful fish, and the Greenburgh Nature Center knows all about these curious creatures that go swish in the night. Under the Sea
March 13: The Dragon King Puppets bring a Chinese folktale to life at the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck. When a terrible drought has dried up almost everything on Earth, a determined grandmother travels to the bottom of the sea in search of the Dragon King, ruler of the sea and rain. Feeling Froggy
March 21: A Year with Frog and Toad Every grumpy character needs a sprightly sidekick; Walter Matthau had Jack Lemmon, and Shrek has Donkey. In this stage adaptation of Arnold Lobel’s beloved children’s book of the same name, the chipper Frog and his grouchy pal Toad wake from hibernation for a toad-ally exciting year. When they’re not out planting gardens and raking leaves, Frog and Toad learn life lessons about companionship and individuality.
