Kid’s Korner in May 2011

This month, the circus rolls into town, a fairy tale comes to life onstage, and other whimsical activities take place as the May flowers bloom

Lions, and tigers, and bears
May 5-8: The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus Call in the clowns — the greatest show on Earth is traveling to the Valley! This beloved group brings their Barnum’s Funundrum tour to the Times Union Center. Funundrum celebrates founder P.T. Barnum with an event 200 years in the making, and this particular show goes all out with daring acrobatics (ever see a tight-rope walker do back flips on stilts?)and other mind-blowing stunts — such as the Spherical Miracle, a globe-shaped cage containing motorcyclists speeding past each other. You’ll get to see performers and contortionists from all over the world, whimsical costumes, ferocious tigers, enormous elephants, and more. Call for complete schedule. $12-$80. • 51 S. Pearl St., Albany. 518-487-2000 or www.timesunioncenter-albany.com

Into the woods
May 7: Hansel and Gretel by Kids on Stage When Hansel and Gretel travel into the woods, they have no idea what’s in store for them. Along their journey, they encounter a grouchy troll guarding a bridge in their path, talking critters, mythical creatures, and fierce goblins working for a hilarious-yet-wicked witch who captures children and turns them into cookies. See the clever pair’s adventure unfold at the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck, as they fend off the evil woman and attempt to rescue other lost children. 11 a.m. $9, $7 children. • 661 Rte. 308, Rhinebeck. 845-876-3080 or www.centerforperformingarts.org

Hello, Dollface
May 7: Pine Hill Doll and Teddy Bear Show and Sale As kids, many of us had a favorite doll or Teddy bear (or eight), but collector Mary Herrman shows off a whole assortment of beautiful and whimsical figures at the Pine Hill Community Center. Although she’s grown now, she’s been collecting dolls and sewing outfits for them since she was young. Herrman currently creates and sells pint-sized clothing for the popular American Girl dolls, in addition to other mini high-fashion duds. The show highlights Herrman’s personal collection, and offers dolls and Teddys for sale. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. • 287 Main St., Pine Hill. 845-254-5469 or www.pinehillcommunitycenter.org

A mime’s a terrible thing to waste
