Thru Sept. 30: Walk Among Live Butterflies Soon you’ll be digging out your scarf and mittens to prepare for the cooler months, but until then, why not have one more day of summer fun? Catch the Greenburgh Nature Center’s captivating indoor butterfly exhibit before saying goodbye to warm weather. In a greenhouse filled with flowering plants, you’ll find a variety of butterflies — from Monarchs to Painted Ladies — sipping nectar and fluttering about. While the sights alone evoke a sense of awe, visitors also get to learn about a butterfly’s life cycle: how they transform from a crawling caterpillar into a winged beauty. On Sept. 19, a naturalist hosts an informal chat to answer any other questions you can think of (2:30 p.m., included with admission price). Walk on the wild side
Sept. 18: Animal Tracks, Homes, & Bones While you’re in school all day, your pets at home are napping, roaming, or munching away (hopefully not on the furniture). But how do we know what creatures in the wild are doing? By following their tracks, we can discover what an animal’s daily adventures are, and the Children’s Museum of Science and Technology wants to show you how to detect these subtle clues. Karate kid: Demonstrations by local martial arts schools are part of the fun at this year’s Kids ExpoWe’re having a party
Sept. 25-26: Kids Expo Throw aside that backpack for the weekend and enjoy all the fun activities you can handle at this annual event. Normally a spring fling, this Dutchess County tradition celebrates its 15th anniversary on a new date, and in a new location — along the Poughkeepsie waterfront. With Waryas Park as its home, the expo adds even more cool things to do, such as extra entertainment and boating activities; there’s even a bus to take guests to the Walkway Over the Hudson. And visitors can still see the live performances, street vendors, face-painters, and interactive exhibits they’ve come to love over the years. • N. Sept. 19: Children’s Book Day As the weather gets cooler, nothing beats curling up with a warm mug of hot cocoa and reading (or being read to). This month, bookworms get their storytime fix in a storybook setting when Washington Irving’s Sunnyside hosts a daylong festival for young readers and families. Meet some of your favorite authors and illustrators — or be introduced to ones you’ve never heard of before. More than 60 award-winning writers and artists attend the event, including authors Gail Carson Levine (Ella Enchanted) and Jean Van Leeuwen (Oliver Pig), and illustrator Bruce Degan (The Magic School Bus). 12-6 p.m. $5, $3 children 5-17, under five free. • 3 W. Late summer serenade
Sept. 5: Sing, Sing, Sing Hear traditional music while viewing modern art at the Storm King Art Center. After roaming the grounds and admiring the center’s outdoor sculptures, enjoy a live performance by local musicians Emily Faxon (violin) and Ruthanne Schempf (piano) as they play popular American folk songs and show tunes. You’ll recognize sing-alongs such as “Come Rain or Come Shine” and George Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm.” Don’t know the words? Don’t sweat it — all guests receive copies of the song lyrics so that everyone can participate.
