Aug. 11: Flow Circus Now you see it, now you don’t: This fun juggling, comedy, and magic show at the Mahopac Library runs for one evening only. Flow Circus’ exciting and energetic performances are not only entertaining to watch (how do they do that?), but their hilarious jokes and stories will crack you up. And while you’re at the library, maybe you can even find a couple of books that can teach you how to perform a few tricks of your own. Aug. 7: Treasure Island Ahoy, matey! For those who love pirate adventures, the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck has the show for you: Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island is being performed live onstage by the Hampstead Stage Company. The play tells the exciting tale of a young man named Jim Hawkins and his search for buried treasure. Along the way, he must fight off Long John Silver and his gang of marauding pirates — who aim to take over the journey and cause trouble. Aug. 14: Storytelling and Music Festival An enchanting day of song and prose awaits you at the Mohegan Colony’s 10th Annual Storytelling and Music Festival. Esteemed poets and storytellers — including Valley favorite Jonathan Kruk — invite listeners of all ages to escape to another world with tales and folklore that celebrate the colony’s heritage. The event also features live jazz performances and an interactive storytelling workshop. But when the sun goes down, braver souls can enjoy ghost stories by flickering candlelight and an open mic show. Aug. 18: Tee Shirt Redo Looking for some fab, new back-to-school threads? Why not recycle last year’s fashions? Make your old tee shirts new again at the New York State Museum’s fun D.I.Y. workshop. Bring your old, worn-out tees and learn fun techniques to give them an updated look, such as cutting up and mixing materials for a completely new design. Not only will you have truly unique additions to your wardrobe, but when someone stops you in the hallway and says how cool your shirt is, you can proudly reply, “Thanks, I made it myself.” Suggested for ages eight and older. 1-4 p.m. $5. Aug. 21: Fascinating Fossils Rediscover the plants and creatures that roamed the Earth before civilization at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. In this engaging event, you’ll view an extensive collection of fossils at the museum’s Outdoor Discovery Center and learn tons of fun facts about where they were collected and how they were formed.
