Kid's Korner

As the temperature increases, so does the fun. This month, watch Peter Pan take flight, try to catch butterflies, and see what it’s like from the inside of a bubble

July 8-Aug. 1: Peter Pan The classic tale of Peter Pan — a clever boy who lives his everlasting childhood on the imaginary island of Neverland — springs to life onstage at the Westchester Broadway Theater. Cheer for the good guys as Pan and the Lost Boys — his ragtag gang of friends — battle the devious Captain Hook and his sidekick Smee, save the princess Tiger Lily, and rescue the Darling children from their pirate kidnappers. The show is based on the original tale Peter and Wendy by J.M. Barrie, and features a timeless cast of characters, including the ever-popular, spunky fairy Tinkerbell. This exciting production includes singing, dancing, and of course, flying (with the help of a little fairy magic). $40-$55 for dinner and show. Pop Culture

July 3: Bubble Trouble with Jeff Boyer Whether you’re blowing, chasing, or popping them, bubbles are just plain fun. And they serve a variety of purposes, too, such as creating a protective barrier for delicate items or making a tasty soft drink that tickles your nose. The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck hosts an interactive event that teaches the many ways bubbles affect our lives — including some that might come as a surprise. You’ll also get to see all kinds of uniquely shaped bubbles, including pyramid- and cube-shaped, bubbles within a bubble, and even a gigantic soapy sphere that one lucky kid can get inside of at the end of the show. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door one hour prior to the performance. $8, $6 children. 11 a.m. • 661 Rte. 308, Rhinebeck. 845-876-3080 or

Butterfly Effect

July 10: Butterflies One of the prettiest signs of summer is a colorful butterfly fluttering by, and the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum offers a hike to scout for these brilliant beauties. Bring a pair of binoculars as your tour guide shares knowledge of the butterflies and moths you might find along the way. A similar stroll through the museum’s grounds takes place on July 24, during which you’ll learn about another vibrantly colored flying creature — hummingbirds. Observe the zippy little birds in their natural surroundings in one of the museum’s gardens, and learn more about their lives and habitat. $5 each event. 10 a.m. • Outdoor Discovery Center. The boy’s travels lead him to encounters with puppets from different cultures, such as England and Indonesia, providing the audience with an uncommon glimpse at the many forms of puppetry found around the globe. 3:30 p.m. $8, $6 children & students. • 7991 Main St., Rte. 23A, Hunter. 518-263-2063 or

the kiss box

Everlasting Love

July 15: The Kiss Box The recently published children’s book The Kiss Box tells the story of a little girl named Sara who receives so much love from the people around her that she doesn’t know what to do with it; so she makes a keepsake box to store it all in. The book’s author, Putnam County resident Regina Gelfer, hosts a fun craft workshop at the Mahopac Library where you can make your very own kiss box. Prior to and after the event (which is recommended for children younger than age 10), Gelfer signs copies of her book, which will be available for purchase that day. The book signing is open to all, but workshop space is limited. Call the library for registration information. 11:30 a.m. • 688 Rte. 6, Mahopac. 845-628-2009 or
