April 7: Tie-Dye Workshop It’s the groovy, colorful fad that keeps coming back (or for some, never goes out of style). Dust off those old bell-bottoms and head over to the New York State Museum, where you’ll discover all kinds of far-out techniques to make an array of psychedelic styles. They provide the dyes, so all you have to bring are the items you want to transform and a little creativity. At the end of the demonstration, participants receive a detailed workbook so that you — um, the kids — can keep creating at home. April 6-May 4: Earth Explorations! Earth, Wind, Water, and Animals Learn all about the basic elements that make up our world at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. Children are given the chance to discover the science of weather, rocks, water, fish, and amphibians in this weekly class. While studying these subjects, kids get to go outside, collect and examine objects, and play games that mix fun and knowledge about the natural world. April 10: Shakespeare for Kids What was Shakespeare like before he knew whether he was meant to be — or not to be — famous? The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck gives audience members an introduction to some of the Bard’s most prominent plays — with a humorous twist, of course — from his own point of view. The performance is set during the time in which Henry V, Hamlet, and Romeo & Juliet were written; all three are featured briefly within the show. April 17: Dirty Sock Funtime Band Join Mr. Clown and the rest of the gang for a rockin’ good time at the Emelin Theatre. With upbeat music and zany lyrics, this eight-piece, classic rock-inspired children’s group sings songs about fun, music, imagination, and everything in between. Making kids of all ages want to get up and dance, these catchy tunes have been dubbed “the most exciting and innovative children’s music ever” by MTV. Learn about the origins of your favorite sweater by taking part in hands-on activities such as sheep-shearing and wool dyeing. Then, find out which techniques were used by 18th-century farmers to weave cloth. Ever see a four-legged shepherd? Be sure to catch the demonstrations of robust Scottish border collies herding sheep across a field — or just coo at adorable newborn lambs as they frolic playfully.
