Soul Survivor
Singer and instrumentalist Steve Winwood became a teenage star when he cowrote and recorded the high-energy single “Gimme Some Lovin’ ” with the Spencer Davis Group in the mid-1960s. In the 40 years since, he’s been a member of two seminal bands — Blind Faith and Traffic — and has scored a long list of hits both with fellow British rockers (like Eric Clapton) and as a solo artist. Perhaps best-known as a practitioner of so-called “blue-eyed soul,” Winwood comes to the Ulster Performing Arts Center this month for a rare Valley appearance.

One-two punch
A mainstay of the region’s art scene, Carrie Haddad has been showcasing contemporary works in her eponymous Hudson gallery for the past 17 years. Last November, Haddad branched out, opening a brand-new exhibition space specializing in art photography. Such Great Heights, the inaugural show at Carrie Haddad Photographs, features works by five photographers, many of which are aerial landscape views. Taken together, these images reflect a world that is at once immense and intimate.

Yes, the holidays are behind us. But why not take one last flight of fancy at the annual Miniature and Dollhouse Show, hosted by the Historical Society of Rockland County? This year’s event is entitled “The Child in All of Us” — an apropos theme for the vast collection of miniatures, toys, dolls, and dollhouses that takes up two galleries at the society’s New City headquarters. Highlights include a number of antique pedal cars, as well as maquettes of puppets from a Lincoln Center production of Cinderella.

The Reich stuff
Always on the cutting edge, Vassar College’s Modfest returns for its seventh season. This multifaceted event offers lectures and workshops, as well as contemporary music, dance, film, and poetry performed by students, faculty members, and guest artists. American Steve Reich — who, along with Philip Glass, is often associated with the musical style known as minimalism — is the featured composer of the four-week-long fest.
