Living Their Dreams: Trine Boode-Petersen and Corinne McDonald

Executive Director of Communications and Executive Director of Operations | The Wayfinder Experience

Kids who attend the popular Wayfinder Experience’s improvisational role-playing summer camps often wish they could stay there forever — after all, it’s a rare day when you can act out theatrical fantasies in the morning and play sports in the afternoon. For former campers and now directors Corinne McDonald and Trine Boode-Petersen, that wish came true.

Ever since they were teens themselves, both women have worked every staff position from counselor on up at the parent-acclaimed Kingston-based camp, which draws participants from around the world to develop leadership skills and self-confidence. Here is a place where, as McDonald puts it, “you get to put on a costume, pick up a magical item and go on an adventure where you determine your character’s full arc. You can be the hero or villain. One of the great things is you are in control, and the consequences are not real life so you can experiment.”

Both directors did just that in life before signing on to Wayfinder full time: McDonald trained in massage, got certified as a diver, and worked in a bakery and a bookstore. Boode-Petersen studied pottery and founded a theater company in NYC (she continues to direct teen and children’s shows at Kingston’s Hudson Valley Sudbury School theater cooperative).

Even though most of the action takes place in summer, you can check out their winter games this month from December 27-29. “We run a whole adventure,” says McDonald. “It’s open for first-timers, and we do go outside. There’s nothing quite like playing in the snow.”
