Carlys Lemler, Esq

Share

As a child, Carlys Lemler, Esq., set her young sights on becoming a powerful leader and a strong working woman. As a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (Class of 2001), Lemler demonstrated strength and leadership in spades in her role as Military Intelligence and Air Defense Artillery Officer, leading a team of soldiers to Kuwait in the Global War on Terror. Then, in 2012, Lemler became General Manager to The Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point. Today, Lemler manages a team of five executives and approximately 300 employees covering everything from finance and accounting to public relations, wedding planning and catering, and maintenance and valet services.

The 39-year-old wife of an active duty West Pointer and mother of two says her proudest professional accomplishment will always be bringing her entire team safely home from Kuwait… but her proudest civilian accomplishment has been bringing significant gains to the hotel including elevated service standards, an improved reputation, and a significant bump in the number of guests who visit every year. “This is not my accomplishment, because it belongs to the entire team.”

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Always lead from the front. In the army, we are given fitness standards that are set by age and gender. A high-ranking female officer once told me, don’t ever pay attention to the female standards for physical fitness — instead, set your intention toward achieving the standard for male age 18-22 because most of the soldiers you lead will be in this age group.”
