Hudson Valley Cider Week Spotlights 100 Cideries With Daily Tastings and Events


The Hudson Valley boasts an impressive (and delicious) list of exports — maple syrup, wine, onions (how you doin’, Pine Island?), and hops, just to name a few. But they pale in comparison to the mighty apple: in fact, according to the USDA, New York is the second-largest apple producing state in the country, with 47 percent of the fruit ending up in sauces, pie fillings, juices, and ciders.

So it’s no surprise that, with all that fruit, local farmers have gotten crafty. Enter Cider Week: now in its fourth year, the first-ever local fête dedicated to apple fermentation aims to revive New York’s orchard heritage by connecting Hudson Valley cider markers directly with their consumers and buyers. (For our downstate pals, the sister event takes place in New York City every November.) 

The 10-day-long event, which kicked off on June 12 and runs until June 21, is jam-packed with tastings, pairings, classes, and dinners at 100 local restaurants, markets, orchards, and breweries. (See here for the full list of locations near you.) Here are some highlights over the next few days:

June 17: Nine Pin Can Launch Party, Troy
This shindig celebrates Nine Pin Cider Works’ brand-spankin’-new canned brew (pictured above). The Albany-based cidery — which is New York’s first farm cidery since Governor Cuomo signed the Farm Cideries Act in 2013 — officially debuted its cans during a ceremonial pig roast on June 13. So historic was that moment that Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan herself proclaimed June 13 as “Nine Pin Ciderworks Day.” The party takes place at The Ruck in Troy from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.

June 20: Cider Tasting at Half Time, Poughkeepsie
From 1-5 p.m., the store with the largest beer selection on the planet offers tastings of all local cider producers involved with Cider Week. Sip to your heart’s content, friends, for this event is entirely free. It’s all going down at Half Time’s Poughkeepsie location.

June 21: Crown Maple Father’s Day BBQ, Dover Plains
Treat Dad to smoked maple bierwurst, bourbon pork shoulder, potato salad, baked beans, seasonal greens (because Mom insisted on something healthy), and coconut creme cake at this outdoor feast. Wash it all down with local ciders and Newburgh Brewery’s Checkpoint Charlie Berliner Weisse; seating times are 12 and 2:30 p.m. It’s only $40 per ticket, so make sure you book your reservations soon. 

June 21: Summer Solstice Cider Celebration, New Hampton
Raise a toast to the official start of summer at Orchard Hill Cider Mill. A barbecue, live music, cocktails, wine, beer — and cider, natch — make for a fitting finale to Cider Week. Entry is just $18; event goes from 1-8 p.m.
