As the old Army ballad goes, “Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.” Today, we’re losing our World War II veterans. In the decade preceding that epic war, however, it was the last members of the Civil War generation who were disappearing. In 1931, nearly eight decades after Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Middletown’s remaining Civil War veterans posed for a photograph during the city’s Grand Army of the Republic parade.
