Events: Polly’s Picks in September 2011

Senior Editor Polly Sparling lists her top event picks for September 2011

Based in New York City, art photographer Lynn Bianchi has had her work included in exhibits at the Brooklyn Museum and Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (among other places). Lynn Bianchi: Continuum, the current show at Woodstock’s Galerie BMG, features works from her “Gold Leaf” and “Globe” collections, both of which explore the soft and magical properties of light. Through Sept. 26. Fri.-Mon. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and by appt. 12 Tannery Brook Rd., Woodstock. 845-679-0027; www.galeriebmg.com

A prolific composer, Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach was renowned for his cantatas, about 200 of which have survived. Kairos: A Consort of Singers is now in the sixth year of its Bach Cantata series, offering performances of these choral works with chamber music accompaniment. This month, hear Cantata No. 17 (“He who offers thanks praises me”) as part of a choral evensong service at the Holy Cross Monastery in West Park. 4 p.m. $10 suggested donation. Rte. 9W, West Park. 845-256-9114; www.kairosconsort.org

Launched in 2010, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company’s Legacy Tour makes a stop at Bard College’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts this month. Three of Cunningham’s best-known works — Suite for Five, Antic Meet, and Sounddance — are performed by dancers personally trained by the late dancer/choreographer, who died in 2009 at the age of 90. Upon completion of the tour in December, the company will disband; this is the last opportunity to see the troupe perform in the Valley. Sept. 9-11. Fri.-Sat. 8 p.m., Sun. 2 p.m. $25-$55. Bard College campus, Annandale-on-Hudson. 845-758-7900; http://fishercenter.bard.edu
