Sculpture for a New Century, an outdoor exhibit at SUNY Orange’s newly expanded Newburgh campus, showcases eight pieces inspired by the natural landscape of our beloved Valley. A four-person jury convened by the National Sculpture Society chose the works on view, which have been fashioned using traditional materials (marble and bronze) as well as fiberglass and reinforced concrete. An accompanying indoor show in the college’s Kaplan Hall details the processes used by an artist to turn a small-scale model into a full-sized, finished work. The high peaks of the Catskills ring out with music when the Belleayre Music Festival gets underway this month. Legendary soul/R&B quintet the Spinners start things off on July 7, crooning “One of a Kind (Love Affair),” “Rubberband Man,” and other gold-record hits. A week later, country music’s Josh Turner (“All Over Me,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance”) takes the stage (July 14). Broadway chanteuse Christine Ebersole, who won the Best Actress Tony for her role in Grey Gardens, tugs at our heart strings on July 21. And Puccini’s masterwork La Boheme, with soprano Diana McVey in the lead role, rounds out the bill on July 28. The festival continues through Sept. 1. Vive la France! Gallic culture hits the spotlight during Bard SummerScape. This seven-week celebration of the arts begins with performances by Compagnie Fetes Galantes, a dance troupe that combines Baroque and modern styles (July 6-8). Molière’s last play, the 1673 comedy The Imaginary Invalid, satirizes both hypochondriacs and the medics who take their money (July 13-22). The King in Spite of Himself, Emmanuel Chabrier’s comic opera about a homesick nobleman yearning to return to France, gets its first staged revival since 1887 (July 27-Aug. 5). Celebrate the nation’s 236th birthday with the Great American Concert and Picnic at Boscobel. Patriotic tunes — along with pop standards, marches, Broadway show-stoppers and the like — are performed by the Southern Dutchess Concert Band, a group of woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians.
