For most of the 19th century, Currier & Ives produced hand-colored lithographs, which it described in its advertising as “colored engravings for the people.” The Legacy of Currier & Ives, now on view at the Albany Institute for History and Art, features 64 of the firm’s depictions of everyday American life — some of which were designed by Eastman Johnson, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, and other noted artists from that era. If you remember the days of poodle skirts, hot rods, and Brylcreem, then the Corvettes Doo Wop Revue is a must-see. The Corvettes, a rock and roll quintet, perform all the 1950s standards — “At the Hop,” “Earth Angel,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” — along with a healthy dose of onstage shenanigans. More than just a screening of movies — although there’s plenty of that — the Westchester Jewish Film Festival also features Q&As with filmmakers and live performances by singers, dancers and other artists. How time flies: The Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College celebrates its 10th birthday with a full slate of music, theater, and dance performances throughout the month. Naturally, the American Symphony Orchestra — whose conductor, Leon Botstein, is the college’s president — gets in on the festivities, performing an all-Richard Wagner concert that includes selections from the operas Lohengrin, Tristan und Isolde, and Die Walküre. Over the course of the last 12 years, the Vassar Haiti Project has raised nearly $1 million, which has been used to improve the lives of the residents of Chermaitre, an isolated mountain village in the island country. One of the project’s premier events, the Haitian Art Sale and Auction features more than 400 original paintings and thousands of hand-crafted items, from iron sculpture to silk scarves, created by Haitian artists. Funds raised at this year’s sale will be used to help establish a medical clinic in Chermaitre. Apr. 5-7.
